The advice I have for parents when they suspect their child has a reading problem is
1) trust your instincts and
2) don’t let anyone tell you to wait and see.
As a mother with two dyslexic children, I’m passionate about being a champion for readers and their parents. I know firsthand the importance of identifying the specific issue as dyslexia and the gift that early intervention can be in buoying a child’s confidence and self image.
I also know that dyslexia is filled with challenges that are lifelong, so the earlier you recognize your child’s strength and help them develop strategies for in and out of school – the better off you all are.
I’m certified in the Barton Reading and Spelling system, by the Dyslexia Training Institute in advocacy and am a professional member of the International Dyslexia Association.

Unfortunately, many schools will offer reading intervention that isn’t proven effective for students with dyslexia. This tide is hopefully changing thanks to grassroots efforts by Decoding Dyslexia and the International Dyslexia Association.
