If you suspect a reading issue

There's no time to wait and see.

Your child needs a champion

Contact Read Team

Hi, I'm Kristine Stewart Hass

The advice I have for parents when they suspect their child has a reading problem is

1) trust your instincts and

2) don’t let anyone tell you to wait and see.

As a mother with two dyslexic children, I’m passionate about being a champion for readers and their parents. I know firsthand the importance of identifying the specific issue as dyslexia and the gift that early intervention can be in buoying a child’s confidence and self image.

I also know that dyslexia is filled with challenges that are lifelong, so the earlier you recognize your child’s strength and help them develop strategies for in and out of school – the better off you all are.

I’m certified in the Barton Reading and Spelling system, by the Dyslexia Training Institute in advocacy and am a professional member of the International Dyslexia Association.

Dyslexia is real

It’s important to know some key facts …

  • Dyslexia is not uncommon – it affects 1 in 5 people and is actually the most common learning disability.
  • It is heritable and neurological – so look to your family tree and know it’s not caused by your environment.
  • It is not at all an intelligence issue.
  • Dyslexia is not a vision issue – dyslexic individuals do not see things backward or in reverse.
  • It can be identified as early as 5 and half years old.
  • It does not go away – but it can be remediated through intervention and the gap in reading can be closed.
  • A child does not need to fail to be dyslexic.
  • It comes with strengths – because of the their brain structure, many with dyslexia have outstanding gifts and strengths in visual, spatial and mechanical reasoning.

Let's talk so your child can grow in skill and confidence

Still, too many children are not getting the appropriate help they need and are losing confidence as they fall further behind. Similarly, many parents find themselves overwhelmed as they navigate their way through the education system seeking services and accommodations for their child.

That’s why I started Read Team to provide evidence- and research-based tutoring services for students with dyslexia as well as consulting and advocacy support for parents as they build a positive and fruitful working relationship with their child’s school.
